2006 Debrecen Conference

Report from Debrecen Conference

Imaginative Spaces: Canada in the European Mind, Europe in the Canadian Mind

Organized by Central European Association for Canadian Studies and University of Debrecen, Hungary

The annual 2006 CEACS conference was a success. It took place in Debrecen (27-29 October) as one of the conferences organized by the Canadian Studies Centre of the University of Debrecen on the general topic of CANADA IN THE EUROPEAN MIND, EUROPE IN THE CANADIAN MIND. This time, participants—about 80, mostly from Central Europe (including 7 Polish participants), but also from Austria, Germany, and Canada--were invited to reflect more specifically on “Imaginative spaces.” Scholars analysed different aspects of this general topic in papers dealing with Canadian and Quebec literature, culture, politics and lingustics. The conference hosted ICCS representatives, including both President Christopher Rolfe and President-Elect Cornelius Remie. The ICCS used the event to launch its new publication: a collection of articles titled “Canada from the Outside In”; and to remind conference participants of the international programs and scholarships it offers (the presentation was given by Guy Leclair). During the conference CEACS new executive was elected, with Janos Kenyeres replacing Don Sparling as President of the Association. Canadian Studies Centre student theatre provided evening entertainment: a performance of Judith Thompson’s Perfect Pie.
